Common Reasons for Tooth Extraction

Tooth extraction may be necessary for various reasons, including:
  • Over-Retained Deciduous (Baby) Tooth: Sometimes, a baby tooth may not fall out as expected when the permanent tooth begins to emerge. This can occur if the roots of the baby tooth do not resorb properly or if the tooth becomes fused to the bone. Keeping a baby tooth for too long can affect the development and alignment of your child's smile. We will monitor your child's dental growth and inform you if extraction is needed to allow the permanent tooth to come in correctly.
  • Severe Decay: If a tooth is extensively decayed and cannot be restored, extraction may be necessary. Minor defects in the outer enamel can gradually cause significant damage to the tooth structure, potentially leading to nerve damage, dental infection, and overall health issues if not addressed.
  • Wisdom Teeth: Wisdom teeth, or third molars, often pose problems due to their positioning or lack of space in the mouth. They can cause issues such as insufficient space for eruption, improper growth, extensive decay, or complications with adjacent teeth and tissues. While some individuals may need their wisdom teeth extracted later in life, it is often recommended to remove problematic wisdom teeth in young adults to prevent future issues.
  • Severe Tooth Fracture or Crack: If a tooth has a severe fracture or crack that cannot be repaired, extraction may be necessary. The extent of the damage will determine whether there is enough healthy tooth structure remaining to salvage the tooth, or if extraction is the better option.
  • Overcrowding: When there is not enough space in the jaw to accommodate all the permanent teeth, it can lead to overcrowding and misalignment. In such cases, extracting some teeth may be part of an orthodontic treatment plan to achieve a well-aligned, functional, and aesthetically pleasing bite.
